Simple model based on energy gap data, has been proposed for calculating the refractive index of different semiconductors, insulators, oxides and halides. The proposed model is applicable to the whole range of energy gap materials. The calculated values of refractive index are compared with the experimental values and the values reported by other researchers. A fairly good agreement has been obtained between them.en_US
