Abstract: Kinetics of chlorination of some substituted anilines like p-toluidine, p-chloroaniline, p-nitroaniline, N-methylaniline and N,N-dimethylaniline by trichloromelamine (TCM) in 50% and 90% aq. HOAc and 100% HOAc have been studied. In 50% HOAc second order dependence in [TCM] is observed for all the activated amines studied except p-nitroaniline where a first order dependence is noticed. In 90% aq. HOAc and 100% HOAc, first order dependence in [TCM] is observed for all the substrates. Kendall's treatment is applied to compute acid- independent rate constants and structure-reactivity is discussed.
