Abstract: Interaction of cationic surfactant cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) with calf-thymus deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) proceeds mainly by an electrostatic binding mechanism. At a critical precipitation concentration, onitored by transmission measurements, the DNA-CTAB complex has been found to precipitate as an insole complex which shows a 1:1 correspondence between the charge equivalents of DNA and CTAB. The complex is found to be solubilized in sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles and still retains the bound structural integrity within the micelles.
