Abstract: Kinetic of nuclear chlorination of phenyl acetate and its substituted derivatives by trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCICA) aqueous acetic acid-perchloric acid media follows second order kinetics, first order each in [substrate] an [TCICA]. The second order rate constants marginally increase with increase in [H+] pointing to a fractional order in [H+]. The second order rate constants have a diminishing trend with increase in the proportion of acetic acid in the reaction mixture. A mechanism involving electrophilic attack of both HOCI and H2O+ CI produced from hydrolytic equilibria has been suggested.
