Abstract: Kinetics of oxidation of -glucuronic acid and -galacturonic acid (S) by sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulphonamide or chloramine-T (CAT) in the presence of alkali at 35° has been investigated and the rate= k [CAT][S][HO]. The product, p-toluenesulphonamide has no influence. Increase in ionic strength increases the rate and the rate decreases when the dielectric constant of the medium is decreased. The rate increases in D2O medium. Activation parameters have been determined from the Arrhenius plots. The mechanism involves the formation of an enediol anion followed by its oxidation by the positive halogen in a rate limiting step.
