Abstract: A criterion for initiation of bed-load transport on a gently sloping ( 3 ᵒ) beach has been established by balancing the forces acting on a sediment particle lying on the slope. A relationship for the instantaneous rate of bed-load transport on a gently slope has been derived from a simple and quasi-steady-analysis of the motion of sedimentary particles. A gentle slope produces net movement of sediment even under oscillatory flow. The proposed theory shows a reasonable agreement with experiments conducted on a near horizontal bed (slope up to 1.5 ᵒ).
