Abstract: The diurnal variability of cloudiness over Indian region, based on data from thermal IR. band cloud images obtained from INSAT-VHRR covering the Indian subcontinent and neighbouring oceans for two monsoonal months of June and July 1986, has been studied. The analysis of day and night brightness temperature data using histogram technique shows clear evidence of lower brightness temperature and hence deeper convection over land during early morning hours. Over oceans, on the other hand, the histograms of differences in brightness temperature show no significant and consistent bias between 0900 and 2100 hrs GMT images. These results have been discussed in relation to the onset and establishment phases of the southwest monsoon over India.
