Abstract: 3-Aminonaphth-2-ol (II), prepared from naphth-2-ol-3-carboxylic acid (I), was condensed with 4-substituted benzoyl chlorides (IIIa-c) and the resulting compounds 3-(4-substituted benzamidoinaphth- 2-ols (IVa-c) were coupled with representative aryl diazonium salts (Va-c) to give 1-arylazo- 3-(4-substituted benzamido )naphth-2-ols (VIa-i). 1-AryIazonaphth-2-ol-3,6-disulphonic acids (IXa-c), obtained by coupling .naphth-2-ol-3,6-disulphonic acid (VIII) with aryl diazonium salts (VIIa- c), were converted to the corresponding 1-arylazonaphth-2-ol-3,6-disulphonyl chlorides (Xa-c)by treatment with thionyl chloride. The compounds Xa-c when reacted separately with piperidine, morpholine and aniline gave 1-arylazonaphth-2-ol-3,6-disulphonamides (XIa-i). The compounds VIa-i and XIa-i when applied on polyester and polyamide fibres as disperse dyes gave orange yellow to reddish violet shades with moderate to excellent pick-up, moderate light fastness and very good sublimation fastness.
