Abstract: | 3-Aryl-5-(2-quinolyl)rhodanines (IIIa-j) were prepared by the treatment of quinoline N-oxide (I) with 3-arylrhodanines (IIa-j) at 90°C in the presence of acetic anhydride. The compound IIIf was further treated with different aromatic amines (IVa-d) to give 2-arylimino-3-(m-methoxyphenyl)-5-(2-quinolyl)- rhodanines (Va-d). The compound I was also treated with N-acetylglycine in presence of acetic anhydride and then with different aromatic amines (VIIa-c) to give 1-aryl-2-methyl-4-(2-quinolylidene)imidazol- 5-ones (VIIIa-c). The dyeing performance and the effect of nature and orientation of substituents on the colour of IIIa-j, Va-d and VIIIa-c were also studied and it was observed that all the compounds have good affinity towards polyester fibres followed by polyacrylic and wool fibres. Further, all the compounds show good fastness to washing and acid perspiration on all these fibres. Light fastness on polyacrylic, however, is better than that on polyester and much better than that on wool. |
