Abstract: Synthesis of a new photoemmitive, benzopyranone 15-crown-5 (1) has been reported starting from 2-formyl benzo-15- crown-5 by using a straightforward protocol. Metal ion extraction profile revealed 1 to extract K+ more selectively over Na+ and Li+ compared to the known benzo-15-crown-5. However, except for slight enhancements (8 to 27%) in the emission intensities, no appreciable changes either in the absorption or emission spectra of 1 were noticeable in the presence of selected group I and II metal ions. The absence of significant optical perturbations suggests at best only weak interaction between the metal ions and the benzopyranone chromophore.
