Abstract: The band structure of semiconductor superlattices is investigated exhaustively for a model based on cell potentials. So far the band structure of such superlattices has been treated widely for a model involving superposing periodic potentials; the model proposed now in terms of cell potential is more general and realistic than this one. The results for the two models are seen to differ in many ways, quantitatively as well as qualitatively. On account of its formulation in a realistic way, the model depending on the cell potential would be more effective than the one related to superposing periodic potential, in regard to interpretation of electronic properties of semiconductor superlattices which are studied experimentally.
