Abstract: Sulphides of transition metal ions (M2+=V2+, Cr2+ and Mn2+) in solid state have been synthesised by reaction with Na2S.7H2O in the presence of sunlight.XRD patterns show that these compounds are not MxSy but mercaptyl hydroxyl metal sulphides, [M(SH) (OH)(H2O)2]. Structure is further ascertained by IR spectra showing bands due to Td-symmetry. The presence of hydroxyl, mercaptyl and aqua groups has been confirmed with TGA,DTA and ESCA.
