Abstract: The nature of the rate accelerating and retarding effects of cationic, anionic, zwitterionic and non-ionic micelles on the proton catalysed hydrolysis of desferrioxamine mesylate (desferal), a trihydroxamic acid, has been studied by kinetic methods using visible spectroscopy. Characteristic features of the media and of the desferal in the reactivity behaviour are discussed. The binding constants of desferal (by hydrophobic or electrostatic effects) to the micelle are seen to be related to-the nature of micellar surface.
