Abstract: Interpretation of claims has to be done by different people at various stages of a patent document. This article looks at these stages and tries to offer general guidelines which can be followed. These guidelines have evolved with practice in the courts. However, the most important point is that every case is unique and has to be interpreted independently. A sample case has been presented and discussed.
