A simple method for the detection of poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and poly-β-hydroxyvalerate (PHV) by thin layer chromatography was developed. Using this method, PHB and PHV were detected in four cyanobacterial species, viz. Nostoc muscorum, Spirulina platensis, Calothrix sp. and Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. Presence of hydroxybutyrate (HB) units and hydroxyvalerate (HV) units was confirmed by UV-spectrophotometric and gas chromatographic analyses.en_US
