Abstract: Bioceramics are widely used as implant materials in orthopaedics. Previously known to be materials in oxidized state, their use is well established now-a-days. In the present review main focus is on their compositions and types. Their behaviour upon implantation is discussed along with the chemical reactions taking place. Various factors affecting the interface formation are also discussed. These clinically important materials are being used in ear surgery, orthopaedics as drug carriers, and for controlled release of certain trace elements. The clinical applications of these materials are also described.
