Abstract: Lignite, an inferior grade coal has a tendency of fast disintegration and is therefore unsuitable as domestic fuel. Various compacting materials (binders) have been tried for lignite compaction so that it can be used as domestic fuel in the form of lignite briquettes. A comparative study of lignite briquettes, prepared by using various binders in different proportions has been made. On the basis of results obtained, the composition of lignite and binders and their optimum proportions have been suggested for preparing lignite briquettes, suitable as domestic fuel. A lignite briquetting machine for briquetting this composition, using forced compaction technique is also developed.
