Abstract: Swertia species (family - Gentianaceae) widespread in nature, are frequently utilized for the treatment of hepatitis, cholecystitis, pneumonia, dysentery, scabies, pain and neurasthemia. The Swertia herbs are also extensively used as bitter tonics and febrifuges in the Ayurvedic system of medicine. This review summarizes the chemical constituents and their biological activities reported till Dec. 1998. The plants of the genus Swertia are rich sources of xanthonoids, flavonoids, irridoids and terpenoids.
