Abstract: Some new 2'-hydroxy-5'-(phenylazo)-N- (1",3"-diketo­phenyl­amine)-3-chloroazetidin -2-ones <b>2a-l</b> have been synthesized and their structures have been established on the basis of their elemental analysis and spectroscopic data. Compounds <b>2e, j</b> and <b>l</b> show significant antibacterial and antifungal activity. 2'-hydroxy-5'(<i>p</i>-chlorophenylazo)-N-(1", 3"-diketo-<i>p</i>-chlorophenylamine)-3-chloroazetidin-2-one <b>2l</b> has been found to be a more potent anti­fungal agent against <i>A. niger</i> and <i>C. albicans</i> as compared to the control drug-Fluconazole.
