Abstract: Primary and secondary alcohols are efficiently oxidized to the corresponding carbonyl compounds using CrO<sub>3</sub> supported onto alumina under solvent- free conditions. It has been found that the presence of small amount of <i>t-</i>butanol in the reaction media is essential. Over-oxidation of aldehydes to carboxylic acids and cleavage of carbon–carbon double bond is not observed by this method.
