Abstract: Two sterols have been isolated from the chloroform extract of <i>Melothria purpusila</i> and are widely used in Manipur for curing jaundice, as ergosta-7.22-dien-3<img src='/image/spc_char/beta.gif' border=0>,5<img src='/image/spc_char/alpha.gif' border=0> ,6<img src='/image/spc_char/beta.gif' border=0>-triol <b>1</b> and 3-O-<img src='/image/spc_char/beta.gif' border=0>-D-glucopyranosyl-ergosta-7,22-dien-5<img src='/image/spc_char/alpha.gif' border=0> ,6<img src='/image/spc_char/beta.gif' border=0>-diol <b>2</b>. The <i>n</i>-butanol extract fractionated from methanol extract yields flavonol glycosides <b>3</b>-<b>5</b> after eluting with solvents of different polarities. These compounds have been identified as quercetin 4'-O-β-D-galactoside <b>3</b>, kaempferol 3-O-<img src='/image/spc_char/beta.gif' border=0>-D-glucosyl (1→2)-<img src='/image/spc_char/beta.gif' border=0>-D-glucoside <b>4</b>, and quercetin 3-O-<img src='/image/spc_char/beta.gif' border=0>-D-glucosyl (1→2)-<img src='/image/spc_char/beta.gif' border=0>-D-galactoside 7-O-<img src='/image/spc_char/beta.gif' border=0>-D-glucoside <b>5</b>.
