Abstract: The Knovenaegel type condensation of benzo[<i style="">b</i>]thiophene-2,3-dione (thioisatin), indol-2,3-dione and acenaphthylene-1,2-dione with imidazolidine, oxazolidine, pyrimidinetrione and thiazolidine derivatives has been described: The newly synthesized products have been characterized by spectral techniques (IR, <sup>1</sup>H NMR, <sup>13</sup>C NMR and mass). Correlation of experimental results and exclusive formation of <i style="">anti-</i>monocondensation products has been ascertained on the basis of semiempirical calculations.
