Title: Living Fossils- Cockroaches:Defying the Passage of Time
Authors: Datta, Sukanya
Issue Date: May-2010
Publisher: CSIR
Abstract: A true or classic Living Fossil is one that was only known from the fossil record until a living representative was discovered, as the sole surviving member of a once numerous and widespread group. Cockroaches have been around for approximately 350 million years and realistically speaking, have never really disappeared only to be rediscovered amidst scientific rejoicing. Therefore, they only qualify as Living Fossils on a  technicality—because they have been around so long and have changed so little in the interim.
