Abstract: Syringaldehyde is prepared from p-cresol via a three step reaction sequence in overall yield of 63-67%. The synthesis involves selective bromination followed by high pressure and temperature methoxilation and catalytical oxidation. The use of copper chloride in different oxidation state as a catalyst in two key steps i.e. methoxilation in aromatic ring (by cuprous chloride) and oxidation of aromatic methyl to aldehyde (by cupric chloride) underscore fidelity of the process.
