Abstract: An improved solvent free, one pot procedure for the synthesis of 5-ethoxycarbonyl-4-aryl-3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones catalyzed by iodine is developed. The process has been utilized successfully in large-scale synthesis of Biginelli products.
