Abstract: Methyl-3-methyl-5-(3-<i style="">N</i>-benzenesulphonylindole)-2<i style="">E</i>,4<i style="">E</i>-penta- dienoate and methyl-3-methyl-5-(3-<i style="">N</i>-H indole)-2<i style="">E</i>,4<i style="">E</i>-penta-dienoate are synthesized and their photoisomerisation behaviour in 1,4-dioxane and methanol are examined. The photoiso-merisation of these compounds is highly dependent upon the substituent present at the indolic nitrogen atom.
