Abstract: A formal synthesis of the aromatic sesquiterpenes (±)-herbertene and (±)-cuparenes is accomplished <i style="">via</i> an efficient synthesis of 1,2,2-trimethylcyclopentanemethanol employing a combination of Claisen rearrangement and ring-closing metathesis reactions.
