Abstract: A simple, rapid response prototype piezoelectric crystal (PEC) analyzer comprising PEC electrode coated with selective polymeric layer, a control unit, solenoid valves, quartz crystal frequency comparator with a digital display weighing approx 1.5 kg is developed. Four kinds of polymeric coating materials, (2-hydroxyethyl) ethylenediamine, (2-hydroxypropyl) ethylenediamine, silicone oil and polyethylene glycol 400 were examined as coatings to fabricate the sensor. Different coating properties contributing to SO<sub>2</sub> sorption such as sorption extent, retention of SO<sub>2</sub> by the coating material, cutoff or overload frequency range, and coating concentration were investigated. All the coated PEC based sensors were found reversible in their response to SO<sub>2</sub> concentration (0.01-30 ppm) with response time (1-2 min) and baseline noise of 0.5Hz (read over 1 h) with a drift of < 10 Hz/h. <b style=""></b>
