Abstract: The complexing equilibria of the reaction of salicylic acid and salicylatopentaminecobalt(III) ions, N5COSalH2+ {N5 = (en)2(NH3) (triethylene tetrarnine) (NH3), and tetraethylenepentamine} with Fe(III) have been investigated in micellar media using sodium dodecyl sulphate and Triton-X 100. Both the micelles exert control over the equilibria, by electrostatic and hydrophobic interaction effects; these effects are, however, relatively more significant in the presence of SDS. The relevant equilibrium constants are reported at 28 ± 1°C. Data analysis shows that salicylic acid has a strong propensity to partition into the interior surface of the micelles. Unlike for FeSal+ and N5COSalH2+, the molar extinction coefficients of N5COSalFe4+ at the experimental wavelength (520 nm) are strongly sensitive to the mi-cellar media.
