Title: Redox behaviour of o-chlorophenol in aqueous solutions

Abstract: Cyclcic voltammetry (anodic) of o-chlorophenol has been carried out in six background solutions having different acidities. The first forward scan exhibits a single oxidation peak in each case. During the subsequent cyclic operation, three additional redox couples appear in sulphuric acid solutions of concentrations 1.0 M and 0.1 M, two redox couples appear in buffer of pH 4.5 and one redox couple appears in buffers of pH 6.0 and 8.5. A plausible explanation for this typical redox behaviour which is considerably different from that of phenol and o-cresol has been offered on the basis of free radical couplings followed by acid-favoured intramolecular rearrangements in the reaction intermediates.
