Abstract: The kinetics of oxidation of methyl, ethyl and n-butyl acetates by bromate in aq. H2SO4 is first order in both [Br(V)] and [ester] and second order in [H+]. The rate increases with decrease in the dielectric constant of the medium. From the effect of [H+] and [HOAc] on rate, BrO2 is established as the reactive species. Electron releasing groups in ester moiety increase the rate and vice versa with a ρ*-value = - 2.1. A mechanism involving direct oxidation of ester before hydrolysis by bromate has been proposed and verified.
