Abstract: Ruthenium tetroxide catalysed oxidation of cyclopentanol and cyclohexanol by aqueous alkaline hexacyanoferrate (III) leads to the formation of an activated complex between the organic substrate and ruthenium (VIII) species. The complex gets slowly decomposed into Ru(VIII) hydride species and intermediate products which in turn are further oxidised by hexacyanoferrate (III) in the subsequent steps to give pimelic acid and acetic acid as the final products of oxidation of cyclopentanol and cyclohexanol respectively.
