Abstract: The kinetics of oxidation of thiosulfate ion by dodecatungstocobaltate(III) has been studied in the pH range of 4.20-5.20. The reaction is first order with respect to both the complex and thiosulfate concentrations. An alkali metal ion (M+) catalysis has been observed and is consistent with a rate law: k = (k0 + k1[M+])[S2O] [complex] where ko accounts for the uncatalysed path and k1, the alkali metal ion catalysed path. A reaction mechanism is proposed considering an outer-sphere association between the complex and thiosulfate ions and bridging by the alkali cations is assumed to be responsible for the catalysis phenomenon.
