Abstract: Complexes of Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) with ɑ- and β-naphthalene-sulphinic acids. have been prepared and characterized on the basis of magnetic moments, ligand field and infrared spectra and thermal studies. IR spectra indicate bidentate O,O'-coordination in all the chelates and S-coordination in the anhydrous mercury complex. The proximity effect in ɑ-naphthalenesulphinic acid hinders its ligation with larger mercury(II) ion. The observed octahedral/tetrahedral equilibrium in cobalt(II) complex has been discussed.
