|Abstract:||The rate of oxidation of Se(IV) by periodate in the pH range of 5-13 is maximum at pH 8. The order in [periodate] is unity and that in [Se(IV)] varies between one and two, depending on [Se(IV)] and pH, the increase in order beyond one being due to the participation of dimeric Se(IV) in the reaction. The mechanism of oxidation involves transfer of an oxygen atom from periodate to Se(IV). The rate of the reaction increases wit? increase in ionic strength indicating participation of like charged species in the transition state.|
