Abstract: | Salicylaldehyde and 2-hydroxy acetophenone on reaction with chloroacetone afford corresponding benzofurans 2a, 2b respectively. The compounds 2a and 2b on treatment with phenyl hydrazine in ethanol give 3a-d. The products 3a-d on treatment with DMF/POCl₃ underwent cyclization to produce substituted pyrazoles 4a-d. The compounds 2a-b on treatment with aromatic amines in ethanol afford the corresponding Schiff’s bases 5a-h, which on treatment with chloroacetyl chloride in dioxane produced azetidinones 6a-h. Further, the compounds 2a and 2b on reaction with various diazotized aromatic amines produce phenyl diazenyl benzofurans 7a-h. The structure of all newly synthesized compounds are established by elemental analysis and spectral studies. Their antimicrobial activities have been evaluated. |
