Title: Rapid spectrophotometric determination of trace amounts of phenol

Abstract: A new spectrophotometric method is developed for the determination of trace amounts of phenol. The method is based on the blue coloured reaction between phenol, sodium nitroprusside and hydroxylamine in a buffer medium of pH range 10.26-11.46. The blue species exhibits maximum absorbance at 700nm. Beer's law is valid over the concentration range 0.1-6.5 ppm. The molar absorptivity is 1.68 x 104 1 mol-1 cm-1 and Sandell sensitivity is 0.0052 μg phenol/cm2. The effects of pH, time, order of addition of reagents, temperature, reagents' concentration and diverse ions are reported.
