Abstract: Reactions of yttrium, gadolinium, erbium and ytterbium isopropoxides with acetyl halides (chloride and bromide) in different molar ratios lead to respective halide isopropoxides containing increasing amounts of ester in the form of addition products. Chloride isopropoxides have also been prepared by radical interchange reactions between lanthanide trihalides and triisopropoxides. A typical 'gadolinium break 'is observed in the solubilities of these products. The reactions of lanthanide t-butoxides with acetyI chloride are rather complex; the lanthanide chlorides formed initially tend to react with the side- product t-butylacetate to form acetoxy derivatives, indicating an interesting variation with the change in the electronegativity values of the metals.
