Title: Neutral bidentate organo-phosphorus compounds based membranes for calcium ion-selective electrodes

Abstract: Some neutral bidentate organo-phosphorus compou1ds have been studied as electrode-active substances for calcium ion-selective electrodes. The effects of the dielectric constant of the membrane, solvent and lipophilic anions as membrane additives on the detection limit and selectivity of calcium ion-selective electrodes have been investigated. The electrode based on tetra(o-tolyl-o-xylyldiphosphine dioxide has been shown to possess ,the best characteristics. Selectivity factors, working range, lifetime and pH-dependence of the electrodelare described. The electrode makes possible the measurements of calcium ion concentrations in the range 10-1 to 10-5 M with a high selectivity of calcium over Li+, Na+, K+ and Mg2+. The calcium content in tap water and in different plants has been determined using this electrode.
