Abstract: The tris-ligated binuclear metal complexes of biacetylazine dihydrazone (BAADH) react with formaldehyde in presence of acid to give tetracyclo binuclear clathrochelates. of the type, [M2(Clathro)] X4[M= Ni(II), X=CI-, Br-, 1-, NO, ClO, BF; M=Fe(II), X=Br-, BF, CIO; and M= Co(II), X = ClO; clathro = C30N18H48]. The nickel(II) and iron(II) tetracycloclathrochelates have spin triplet and spin quintet ground terms respectively and the cobalt(ll) complex has a spin doublet ground term. Their spectra show some departure from the usual pattern observed for the respective metal ions in octahedral complexes and have been interpreted in terms of trigonal pqsmatic or pseudotrigonal prismatic approximations. Electrochemical studies of the binuclear clathrochelates reveal that they undergo two-step one-electron redox processes and their electrochemical behaviour is also consistent with the proposed structures.
