Abstract: Nature of active phases in CuCI2-KCl/-Al2O3 catalyst system for oxychlorination of ethylene has been investigated by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and FTIR spectroscopic techniques. The results indicate the presence of CuCl2.3Cu(OH)2 on the surface as the major active phase, the minor phase being Cu(OH)CI. Based on spectroscopic data, a structural model for the active phase has been proposed.
