Abstract: A new mixed pyrazolyl phosphine oxide ligand, viz., bis( 3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl) chlorophosphine oxide (1) has been prepared from the reaction of POCI, and 3,5- dimethylpyrazole. The compound (1) has been characterised by elemental analysis, IR, UV-visible, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The ligand undergoes smooth P- N bond cleavage when reacted with Cu(II) in EtOH medium and copper(II) complexes of the type [Cu(DMPZ)2X2] (DMPZ = 3,5-dimethylpyrazole; X-Cl- or CH3COO -) have been isolated which have been characterised by elemental analyses, IR, UV-visible, magnetic and EPR measurements.
