Abstract: Metal complexes of Cr(III), Mn(III), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) with monophenylbutazone( 4-butyl-l-phenyl-3, 5-pyrazolidinedione, MPB) have been synthesized and characterized. The IR spectral studies indicate that the ligand acts as a unidentate and coordinates through the nontautomeric carbonyl group in the case of Cr III))and Fe(III) complexes, as bidentate monoionic ligand coordinating through both the carbonyl groups in the Hg(II) complex, as. bidentate monoionic ligand coordinating through the tautomeric carbonyl group and C=N in the case of Zn(II), Mn(III), Cd(II) and Cu(II) complexes and as a tridentate monoionic ligand coordinating through both the carbonyl groups and C=N in the case of Co(ll) and Ni(ll) complexes. The thermogravimetric studies indicate the presence of water molecules in the Co(ll), Ni(lI) and Cu(II) complexes.
