Abstract: A new complex of the composition WCI2(OC6H4But-4)4 (1) has been synthesised via the reaction of WCl6 with 4-tert-butyl phenol in the presence of pyridine in 1:4:4 molar ratio. It has been characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductance, molecular weight determination, IR and 1H NMR studies. Thermal studies (TG and DTA) of the complex indicate multiple, decomposition steps which are both exothermic and endothermic. The reactions (1) with 2 equivalents of Ph3AsO, Ph3PO and DMSO(LO) lead to the formation of oxygen abstracted products of the type WO(OC6H4But-4)4 LO.
