Title: On the mechanism of gas phase oxidising and reducing action of N2H4 in the presence of HO- ion

Abstract: Quantum mechanical study of gas phase oxidising and reducing action of hydrazine in the presence of HO - has heen carried out by semiempirical MNDO method. After construction of potential energy surface, the energetically favourable reaction paths have. been characterised. The results have been compared with the results ohtained from experiment and those obtained Irorn earlier theoretical studies. The results of the present work are in excellent agreement with the experimental findings. It has been found that initiation of oxidising reaction takes part through the dissociation of N2H3- to NH2 and NH ; the reducing reaction proceeds through release of an electron from N2H3-, forming free radical N2H3 spontaneously.
