dc.description.abstractThe oxidation of methionine (Met) by pyridinium bromochromate (PBC) leads to the formation of corresponding sulphoxide. The reaction is first order each in PBC and Met. The reaction is catalysed by H+ ion. The reaction rates have been determined at different temperatures and the activation parameters have been calculated. The oxidation has been studied in nineteen organic solvents and the solvent effect analysed using multiparametric equations. A mechanism involving an acyclic sulphurane transition state has been proposed.en_US
