Abstract: Dinuclear diamagnetic niobium(lll) and tantalum(Ill) complexes of the type M2Cl2;P2(where M=Nb, Ta; P = monotertiary phosphine) have been synthesised by the ligand exchange reactions of [M2Cl6;(SMe2)3 (M =Nb or Ta) with monotertiary phosphines viz. diphenyl (p-tolyl)phosphine (DPpTP), diphenylpropylphosphine (DPPP), tri-p tolylphosphine (TpTP), diphenylvinylphosphine (DPVP), ethyldiphenylphosphine (EDPP) and tripropylphosphine (TPP). All these complexes have been characterised by elemental analyses, IR, 1H NMR, 31p NMR, 13C NMR spectroscopy and magnetic moment data.
