Abstract: The kinetics of oxidation of octacyanomolybdate(IV) and octacyanotungstate(IV) by dodecatungstocobaltate(III) have been studied in aqueous acidic medium at variable temperatures. Both reactions exhibit overall second order kinetics, first order in each reactant. Acid and alkali metal cations are found to have a positive influence on the reaction rates. Alkali cation catalytic order is K+> Na+> Li+. An attempt has been made to correlate the kinetic data in terms of Marcus cross relationships and a satisfactory correlation predicts an outer-sphere mechanism for either reaction.
