Abstract: The excess molar volumes VE of mixtures of water + polythyleneglycol (mono-, di-, tri- and tetra-ethylenecols) have been measured as a function of compositions at 303.15 and 308.15 K. The values of VE are negative over the entire composition range. Apparent molar volumes have been calculate from these data. These results suggest that weak hydrophobic effects might develop in the water-rich region, its magnitude increasing with the size of the hydrocarbon chain.
