Abstract: Kinetics of copper(II)-catalyzed autoxidation of sulphur(IV), in the form of bisulphite, in acetatebuffered solutions obey the rate law
Robs = k5 [S(IV)] + k6[Cu(ll)][S(lV)]2[H+]-1.
The buffer exerts a slight rate decreasing effect, showing the higher acetato complexes to be less reactive. Substitution of the second sulphite into the coordination sphere of copper(II) appears to be the rate-limiting.
